Royce McGlashen

Royce is well known as one of New Zealand’s leading potters. He qualified as a Master Potter in 1971. Royce is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (Geneva) and in 1989 received an MBE for his services to Pottery in New Zealand.

At his studio in Brightwater, near Nelson, Royce produces a wide range of work, including hand-decorated tableware, and ceramic art pieces. The art pieces often reflect his environment and life experiences. The teapot form has been a major interest of Royce’s and many have been produced using a variety of surface treatments and decorations. Recently Royce has been working with coloured slips which when fired have a matt surface. Occasionally a flash of glaze adds an extra contrast.

Royce has established a clay company, Mac’s Mud Company which produces a range of clays including Terracotta, Stoneware, Slabware, Mac’s White, Porcelain and Paper Clay. Much of Royce’s current ceramic artwork uses Paper Clay, which he enjoys for its fantastic construction abilities.

Producing works on paper was a natural progression and Royce exhibits a range of paintings primarily using gouache and watercolour. Often the works have floral themes but more recently he has been painting stylised land and seascapes.

All of the works shown on this page are available for sale.
