Appointments to Boards

The Department of Internal Affairs is responsible for administering appointments to the boards of select Crown entities and statutory bodies. For a complete list of the Crown entities and statutory bodies that the Department has responsibility for, see: Crown Entities, Statutory Bodies and Trusts

About Board Appointments

The Department collects nominations, undertakes a short-listing of candidates and recommends suitable candidate(s) to the relevant Minister who will select their preferred appointee(s). Final decisions are approved by Cabinet.

If you are interested in serving on a board, the Department recommends that you register with any of the following nominating agencies:

Registering with a nominating agency does not mean your name will be put forward automatically to Ministers, as agencies select suitable candidates to forward for consideration based on the appointment criteria.

Current board vacancies can be found on by searching under the category Boards and Governance.

Please note that:

  • Ministers seek nominations from a range of sources and that nominations may not necessarily result in the appointment of any particular person.
  • Cabinet has agreed that, as a general rule, Ministers should not appoint public servants to statutory boards and other public bodies in which the Crown has an interest.

Pre-appointment Checks

Nominees will be asked to provide declarations to the Department. This includes declaring any actual or perceived conflict of interest, or declaring any other matter that may affect their suitability for appointment. The Department may check the accuracy of any information relating to an application for appointment.
