DigitalNZ API Integrations Showcase

The DigitalNZ API enables developers to find and query data from across the New Zealand cultural, education, and government sectors and create new digital experiences. Here are some of the things people have made with our API. If you think we’ve missed your example of using the DigitalNZ API let us know and we’ll include it here.

National Library of New Zealand Website

The DigitalNZ API powers the search experience on the National Library website. It enables visitors to search across items in the various National Library of New Zealand catalogues as well as the Alexander Turnbull Library's unpublished collections.


N4L Pond

Pond, the Network for Learning's portal, is an online environment for education resource discovery and participation. Pond uses the DigitalNZ API to search across hundreds of institutions for relevant digital content.


The Canterbury Earthquake Digital Archive (CEISMIC) is a comprehensive digital archive of video, audio, documents and images related to the Canterbury Earthqakes of 2010 and 2011. CEISMIC's collection search is powered by DigitalNZ.



The WW100 Centenary website uses the DigitalNZ API to help people find images, audio clips and video relating to New Zealand's participation in the First World War.


NZ on Screen - Reel Choice

NZ on Screen is an online showcase of New Zealand screen culture. The DigitalNZ API powers their Reel Choice iPhone app, a handheld showcase of Aotearoa television, film and music videos.

Europeana 1914 -1918

Europeana 1914-1918 brings together resources from libraries and archives with memorabilia from families throughout Europe. Europeana uses the DigitalNZ API to source images, films, and historical materials that relate to New Zealand's involvement in the First World War.


Lifelines Table

Lifelines is a large-scale multi touch table on The National Library Wellington ground floor. It uses the DigitalNZ API to connect visitors to their heritage through dates, places and people.


QueryPic is a digital humanities research tool for seeing, searching and understanding the digitised newspapers made available by Trove and Papers Past. The Papers Past data is queried through the DigitalNZ date facets feature.


Culture Collage

Culture Collage is an experiment in presenting digital content as a continuous river of imagery. Culture Collage uses several cultural heritage APIs, including DigitalNZ, to create a truly international tool for visual exploration.

Metadata Explorer is an attempt to explore national digital libraries, pan-national digital libraries and libraries through the metadata associated with a search.

Embedded Widgets and Custom Related Search

Many institutions either integrate DigitalNZ-sourced content into their own search results or embed a mini DigitalNZ search engine to help their visitors find related content across other collections. Here are some examples.

Te Papa Collections Online Collections Online has information on over 500,000 artworks, objects and specimens from Te Papa’s collections.
Auckland War Memorial Museum Auckland Museum's online collections comprise over 1 million items covering the natural sciences, human history, and documentary heritage.
New Zealand Electronic Centre The New Zealand Electronic Text Collection comprises significant New Zealand and Pacific Island texts and materials held by Victoria University of Wellington Library.
Auckland Libraries Heritage Images Search Heritage Images to find over 100,000 images from the photograph and map collections of Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries.
NZ Museums Online guide to art galleries and museums in Aotearoa New Zealand.
NZ On Screen NZ On Screen is a showcase of classic NZ television and film. View programmes, and find out about the people who made them.
Kete Horowhenua Kete Horowhenua is a knowledge basket of images, audio, video and documents which are collected and catalogued by the community.
Tauranga Memories Tauranga Memories captures community history through personal stories, photographs, video and audio footage.
The Prow A website featuring historical and cultural stories from Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough.
Digistore TKI Te Kete Ipurangi is New Zealand's bilingual education portal and is an initiative of the Ministry of Education. DigitalNZ is offered as an alternative search.
The Chinese Digital Community The Chinese Digital Community contains historical and contemporary information, articles, images, audio, video, documents and web links about New Zealand's Chinese community.
