Academy launched its new monthly lgbtq movie nights with the crowd favourite Pride last month.

Gorjan Markovski from Academy Cinemas has taken a look at Laurence Anyways:

What could so simply have been a rote melodrama about the changing relationship dynamics in a long term couple, in Laurence Anyways becomes an epic ode to the type of love that knows no bounds and prejudice when one half reveals that they were born the wrong sex.

World-cinema trailblazer Xavier Dolan has chosen to display this very unique love story in a sensually stimulating fashion in which every piece of kitschy 80s and 90s fashion statement and electro-throwback tune breathes emotion into the story.

The big screen was intended for cinema this rich, where neon-coloured clothing falls from the sky and tunes from Depeche Mode, Visage and Kim Carnes soar along to the feelings brought by the skilful players on show here.

Despite the ear and eye candy it is these touching aspects that look at what force can really tear apart a committed relationship, that really end up making this film a moving achievement.

Laurence Anyways shows at Academy Cinemas on Lorne St, Auckland, at 8.30PM Saturday 15 November.
