Starting a mini list of some free or cheap (under $5 and $10) things people can do in New Zealand,

any suggestions?

Or if you're wanting to get away from the bar scene,
The Auckland Museum is pretty cheep to have a wonder through NZ and world history.
Motat is also another reasonibly priced place to go to, thats the Museum of transport and techonology.
Next to that is western springs, a nice place for a stroll, and then there's Auckland Zoo.....

John: some of your places are not within the budget that the OP of doing things for $5 to $10...

Auckland Museum: Is a DONATION (of approx $5 upwards) to get in... and they expect that donation too! Even as a AK ratepayer you are expected to pay even thou you pay for the upkeep in your rates!
To see any special events that they put on, will cost EXTRA money to get to see them.

Western Springs: FREE to walk around. It is 1.32km per circuit around the lake.

Auckland ZOO: Is not cheap to visit... it is $19 per adult... Prices are online to view. http://www.aucklandzoo.co.nz/default.asp?sectionID=13

In summertime, free activities include walking and picnicking in the gardens.  Take a ball with you anywhere outdoors - park or beach are best - and find someone to play with.  I'm talking ballsports not other activities (although that is an option if you're discrete).

Many museums are free to wander around in - good spots in winter.

Libraries are good for sitting and reading magazines and newspapers, for listening to CDs, and for borrowing books.  They can also be good places to meet people.
