When the Records Management Standard for the New Zealand Public Sector was implemented, the previous four mandatory standards were revoked; this included the Storage Standard.
The Storage Standard included requirements for the appropriate management of records and archives. The records component was incorporated into the new standard, but because the Records Management Standard focuses on the management of current records and not archives, we had to ensure we still have guidance for the storage of archives.
To fill this gap, the Chief Archivist has issued an Instruction to local authorities on the protection and preservation of protected records, under section 40(2) of the Public Records Act, and an Instruction to approved repositories on the proper maintenance of public archives under section 26(2)(c) of the Public Records Act.
Each instruction outlines a number of requirements for the appropriate storage of archives; the requirements repeat those in the revoked storage standard. So while the source of the guidance for the storage of archives has changed, the mandatory requirements have not.
