There is a fee to take a claim to the Disputes Tribunal. However, as no lawyers are involved you will avoid a lawyer’s bill, unless you choose to seek legal advice before the hearing. Lawyers cannot attend a hearing with you or appear on your behalf.
The following fees are payable at the time of lodging a claim:

Extending the claim amount
The amount claimed must not exceed $15,000, but you can extend it to $20,000 if both parties agree in writing. Use the agreement to extend financial limit form (PDF, 695KB).
How to pay
If you’re applying online, you’ll need to pay by credit card. We can’t accept payment methods such as Paypal or online banking transfer.
If you’ve filled in a paper form, you can pay by cheque (made out to “Ministry of Justice”); by EFTPOS or credit card at your local court; or by cash at your local court (please don’t send us cash in the post).
