Terms of use


These terms of use apply to any activity on the websites and  (the “Site”). By viewing and using the Site, you will be deemed to agree to these terms.

In these terms of use, we refer to the Department of Internal Affairs as “the Department” or “we”.

Warning: Offence to provide misleading information

It is an offence, including under the Passports Act 1992, to make a misleading oral or written statement in an application for a passport and/or to use a passport issued in respect of another person.


Persons using, or in possession of, a forged or false New Zealand travel document, are liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years, a fine not exceeding $250,000, or both.


All prices stated are in New Zealand dollars and include Goods and Services Tax (GST). The GST amount will be shown separately to the product price on the GST receipt produced by the Department.

Where applicable, cost for delivery will be charged separately.


Applications will not be processed until payment has been received by the Department.

Upon successful payment, the user will receive a confirmation of payment by email.

Credit card payment transactions will take place within a secure payment system provided by Payment Express. Payment Express is solely responsible for this transaction. Please refer to the Payment Express privacy/security policy for more information.

Indemnity for unlawful use

You agree that if you knowingly access or use or attempt to access or use any online passport service for an unlawful purpose (including but not limited to fraud or attempted fraud or hacking or attempted hacking), you will be liable to pay any party (or the Department on its behalf) the amount of the loss caused directly or indirectly by your unlawful actions. For the avoidance of doubt, this clause is not intended to confer benefits enforceable by third parties under the Contracts (Privacy) Act 1982.


Whilst the Department takes all reasonable care to ensure that the Site is safe and secure, to the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim and exclude all liability for any claim, loss, demand or damages of any kind (including for negligence) arising out of or in connection with

  • your use of the Site or the information, content or materials included on the Site or on any website to which it is linked; or
  • your transmission of information through the Site in the event of its interception or theft by a third party

Improper use of logons

You agree that you will not use your logon for a purpose (whether lawful or unlawful) for which it was not intended.

You agree that you will notify the Department if you know or have reason to believe that your logon has been compromised or has been or may be used for unlawful or fraudulent purposes.

Continuity of service

The Department makes no warranty or representation, express or implied, as to continuity of service and reserves the right to suspend, terminate or otherwise alter access to some or all of the Site's services at any time and without notice.

Crown copyright

Unless otherwise indicated, copyright in material on the Site is owned by the Crown.


You are welcome to link to our site but you or your website must not misrepresent your relationship with the Department or refer to the Site as a ‘partner site’ unless you have express and written permission to do so.

Using frames to display the Site is not permitted.

Revisions of terms

The Department may revise these terms of use at any time. Any such revisions will take effect once notified in a post or other announcement on the Site.

Governing law and jurisdiction

These terms of use are governed by and to be construed in accordance with the laws of New Zealand and you agree to submit to the jurisdiction of the courts of New Zealand.
