How we respond to contact from you

When we get an email from you, we aim to respond within three working days.

If you phone us outside of normal office hours which are 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, we have a service for you to leave us a message. Otherwise, a receptionist will answer your call and transfer you to someone who can assist you.

How we handle inquiries and complaints about the classification system or the classification of a specific publication

Your inquiry or complaint will be handled by the Information Unit. Our job is to understand the Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993 (the Classification Act), so that we can help you with any aspect of this New Zealand legislation.

If you are concerned that your request for information has not been dealt with appropriately you have the right to complain to the Office of the Ombudsmen.  The Ombudsman’s address is:

Contact the Censorship Compliance Unit if you are concerned that someone is breaking the classification law

If you are concerned that someone could be breaking the classification law, the first step is to contact the Censorship Compliance Unit of the Department of Internal Affairs on 0800 257 887. They are one of a group of officials responsible for enforcing the Classification Act.

Contact your MP or the Ministry of Justice about changes to the Classification Act

If you would like to comment on, or suggest a change to the Classification Act, you should contact your local Member of Parliament or the Minister of Justice. The Ministry of Justice administers the Act and is responsible for any changes to the legislation.
