New signs give help and hope

Lifeline Aotearoa has placed semi-permanent signs around the Hamilton as part of a "For help and hope" campaign in the Waikato district.

The signs are designed to inform people of Lifeline services and highlight the 24/7 free phone line. They are an initiative driven by Lifeline and supported by other agencies.

Jo Denvir, Lifeline’s CEO, believes people need access to help 24/7. “We know that talking helps, especially when people feel alone, isolated and overwhelmed.” Says Ms Denvir.

“Our trained staff and volunteers are here to listen to the tough stuff; offer support and strategies to those struggling with life issues or facing the impacts of depression, anxiety or emotional pain.”

Good Things: Raglan Suicide Prevention Group


Suicide is devastating for those personally affected and their communities.
Raglan, a small Waitako community, had felt the effects of suicide particularly hard with 6 members of it's community committing suicide in just 2 years.

The Raglan Suicide Prevention Group was set-up in 2012 in response to the high suicide rate. Lifeline began working with them, providing SAFETALK workshops and Lifeline ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills) courses.

Community members learnt to recognise suicidal signs, have confidence to approach and talk to a person at risk and where to access further support and personal assistance. 

Since the group was started, there have been no suicides in the Raglan community.


 Appeal Update: You did it!

Thanks to those who responded to our appeal in June and other funding sources, we have been able to train 40 new volunteers. 

These wonderful volunteers will be answering calls from all over New Zealand with 12 located in Auckland, 4 in Taranaki, 11 in Waikato and 13 in Christchurch.

Volunteer Profile: Rachel Kinley

What is your favourite experience with Lifeline?
I have more than one favourite experience; volunteering alongside people who care passionately for the wellbeing of others and who have become respected colleagues and friends. Speaking to the police when they arrive to help a distressed caller who has decided in the course of the call that they do want to live and need help at the moment. Hearing callers tell me I have made a difference to their day because I listened to and respected them. 

What does volunteering mean to you? 
It means using my time and skills to support others. I do it because I can, because I want to and because I feel as if I can contribute something worthwhile. I do it because I feel I am mostly good at it so it gives me a sense of self-worth. I do it in the hope that there will be like-minded people to support me when I need it. 

Have you faced any obstacles in your volunteering journey? 
I have always been well supported by Lifeline from the initial training, to self-awareness, ASIST suicide training, workshop opportunities and supervision. I have been supported by some truly amazing men and women in Lifeline and continue to be so. 

How do you see the future of volunteering for yourself and New Zealand in the future? 
I believe New Zealanders will continue to volunteer for causes they hold dear because that's just part of who we are. Our belief that in being connected we are happier, healthier and lead fulfilled lives drives this. 

Wellbeing: Everyday mindfulness

Our human instinct is to think about the past and focus on the future. But while this is important, we are all too often missing what's happening in the present. Here are some tips on how to do this in your everyday life:

1. Just breath
Breathing can be a good starting point when practicing and developing mindfulness. By being mindful of our breathing we can train ourselves to remain calm in stressful encounters and produce a clearer mind for critical thinking in stressful situations. 
  • Take long, slow deep breathes which take a count of 3 to inhale and gently exhale to a count of 3. 
  • Stay focused on the breathing - feeling your lungs fill and empty. 
  • Your thoughts are likely to wander, that's OK, just simply acknowledge this and bring your thoughts back to your breathing. 
  • Do this for 5 minutes, as you develop your skills you can extend the time period and even count from 3 gradually working up to 7. 
2. Mindfulness at work
  • Make a commitment to spend 5 minutes a day being mindful of your breathing. 
  • Take a few minutes each day to focus on your thoughts, so rather than rushing into the office and getting straight to it - take a minute to sit and think about how you feel in that moment. What are the smells and sounds around you? 
  • Slow down. If you rush, you miss things. Deadlines need to be met but try to take time in your day to do an activity slowly. 
  • Find some time at the end of your working day to reflect on the day. Try not to judge yourself or others and simply notice your feelings and accept these for what they are. 
3. Be human
Take time out to just 'be'. That could mean sitting in your chair in silence and spending time with your thoughts or focusing on your breathing. Or it could be taking a walk in the park and allowing yourself to see the beauty around you, hear the sounds and smell the smells for no reason other than just being present. 

There is so much to see and notice if we only just took the time.

Behind the Scenes: Auckland Call Centre

The Auckland call centre is one of many Lifeline branches around the country. Located in Great South Road, Greenlane a team of paid staff and trained volunteers answer calls from the Lifeline 24/7 Helpline (0800 543 354) as well as Kidsline, Suicide Crisis Helpline and Chinese Lifeline.  

Kidsline Update: Annual Appeal 2015

The current Kidsline Buddies (and some past Buddies) did a great job of promoting Kidsline during our annual collection on July 25th - even in the cold weather! 

We want to say a massive thank you to the Buddies who volunteered their time to help out. We really appreciate it!
