While much of what happened at the Stonewall Riot is hazy and accounts vary among witnesses, she is acknowledged as the first person to throw a brick.

Her body was found floating in the Hudson River shortly after the 1992 Pride March, and her death was initially declared a suicide. However there are claims she had earlier been harassed near the spot where her body was found.
It was only in 2012 that New York police re-opened the case as a possible homicide.
