Research the groups have carried out shows nearly a quarter of New Zealanders surveyed saying they would be uncomfortable being friends with someone with HIV.

That’s despite good knowledge of the facts when it comes to HIV – the majority of people surveyed by Colmar Brunton realise HIV can’t be transmitted by sharing a drinking glass, hugging someone or sharing food.

However, 47 per cent of people said they would be uncomfortable having a flatmate who is living with HIV and 56 per cent said they would be uncomfortable having food prepared by someone who HIV positive.

The survey also found 52 per cent of people were uncomfortable about a child playing with another child who has HIV. As for being friends with someone who is HIV positive, 23 per cent said this would make them uncomfortable. Just 24 per cent said they would be comfortable.
