Big Gay Out A-Z

Posted in: Events
By Jacqui Stanford - 7th February 2015

On Sunday, Auckland hosts the Big Gay Out at Coyle Park in Pt Chevalier. From bears, to families, pooches and rainbows, here is our A-Z of what to expect.

Awesome people … that's obvious.
Bears and Beers … check out the Beer Garden – run by Urge and Caluzzi (as a NZAF fundraiser) it’s the place where the bears and their friends generally reside as they gather for Bear NZ Week.
Condoms … the Big Gay Out is run by Love Your Condom and there will not be any shortage of them, so stock up!

The dance tent is always pumping

Dance tent ... the place to bust a move - it will have a mix of DJs throughout the afternoon and well into the evening.
Entertainment … The Hipstamatics (New Zealand’s R’n’B answer to the Jackson 5), J-Williams with his sisters Emily and Lavina, K.One, Pieter-T and Brooke Duff, plus heaps more.
Families … yes the Big Gay Out is super family friendly, welcoming all, bring your kids, your nana, or your ‘gay family’.
Gold coin … bring some of these so you can make a donation when you arrive.
Hotties … yes, there is always plenty of, um, scenery … no matter what your type!
Ink … your name to a petition calling for gay men convicted of having sex before Homosexual Law Reform to finally be pardoned.

Will John Key be there? If so, what might he do to nab the headlines in 2015?

John Key … will he attend this year? If so, what next - with his history of dancing with drag queens, posing with hot shirtless men and playing beer pong.
Kissing … one of the best things about the Big Gay Out is the safe space it creates for same-sex couples to show their affection. However we request you don’t get TOO carried away with the PDA please!
LYC’s social media fun … there will be a huge screen cheekily called “Big Richard” next to the main stage which will show all your tweets and Instagram pics. Just make sure everything is tagged #biggayout and you’re following @loveyourcondom.

The market place is great for refuelling - and shopping

Market place … the place to find food, cold drinks and all kinds of interesting stalls!
No more beersies for you … (here’s our mum moment) – be careful how much you drink, it can get really hot – keep up with the water!
Out and proud … be yourself and be proud!
Pooches … it’s the time of year when we see just how much we love our furry friends. Look out for some pampered and glammed-up pups.

Queens … drag queens will be everywhere and are always in hot demand for photos.
Rainbows … umbrellas, hats, coolers, dogs … everything that could have a rainbow probably will.
Slip, slop slap … at the end of the day there are usually a fair few lobsters around. Make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen!
Transport … you can get a free bus from outside K’ Rd’s Family Bar and avoid the side-street circling for parks.
Uniforms … armed services and emergency services often have recruitment drives at the Big Gay Out.
scaVenger hunt … add LYC on Snapchat to take part in its Big Gay Out Scavenger hunt!
Water ... head down to the beach for a swim to cool off!
eXes … yeah the odds are you are probably going to run into a few.
You! See you there!
Zzz … you will need a good sleep after a long day in the (hopefully!) sun.
