In a clip from her show, DeGeneres explains she doesn’t usually read tabloid press about herself, and she rarely responds to it, but is this time around.

She responds to the pastor “first of all I am not ‘married’, I am married. That’s all,” to cheers from her guests.

“I don’t even know what it means to ‘celebrate my lesbianism’. Well I guess I do, it’s like that,” she says, pulling a party popper. “I’m gay!”

Humour aside, she says the only way she is trying to influence people is to be more kind and compassionate with one another. "I don't have an agenda," before finishing with a message for the youth of the world:

"Live your lives being exactly who you are. Be true to yourself ..."
