Out Games exceed organisers' expectations

6.45PM: Wellington's Out Games and associated human rights conference have "more than lived up to the expectations of the organising committee," according to one of the event's co-chairs.

"We've been bowled over by the positive response," says David Hindley. "Organisations such as ours can only put the basis of an event in place and then it relies on the participants being live wires. I've been amazed at the level of energy and passion of the participants and the sports and human rights events... and sometimes it has been very, very moving."

He cites last night's cultural dinner as being "very special" and the opening march along the waterfront last weekend as his own personal highlight. "The march from the Out In The Square fair to Te Papa for the opening was "inspiring" he says.

With everything drawing to a formal close tomorrow Hindley says there is a sense of growing relief amnongst the organisers and their volunteer workers that "we'll be able to get on with our lives, to do all the things we have had to put on hold."

But he believes that there will be flow-on advantages stemming from the sports and human rights event. "For instance, there are sports teams here and overseas which are keen on getting future contact going independent of the Out Games," he says. Daily News staff - 18th March 2011
