A petition will be presented to Parliament’s Health select committee today, calling for improved healthcare for transgender and intersex New Zealanders.

The petition, which has more than 400 signatures, urges action “to address the inadequate supply of publicly funded gender reassignment health services, including counselling, endocrinology and surgical services, in New Zealand”.

It will ask for improved visibility and recognition of our communities need and inclusion in the system.

The petition and an associated report will be presented by trans and intersex rights campaigner Tom Hamilton, who will address the select committee about how the situation can be improved.

Currently gender reassignment surgeries, which have a vast waiting list, are on hold as there is no national surgeon, or support team.

He is being supported by Green MPs Kevin Hague and Jan Logie – Hague sits on the Health select committee.
