August is Family History Month!

Family history is cool - pass it on! All month long, there are events all over Wellington to help you with your genealogical research, whether you're getting started, or ready to dive in further.

August 6 - 12

Tuesday 7: Voice of the past - what oral history can do for you

Lynette Shum, Oral History Adviser at the Alexander Turnbull Library will explain what oral history is about, how you can start making your own and how the Turnbull Library can help you.

Friday 10: Lunchtime tour of Wellington Central Library

The second of a series lunchtime tours of Wellington collecting institutions/

Saturday 11: Speaker Saturday

Three speakers will explore different aspects of family history research:

  • Don Hansen (winner the NZSG’s Lucy Marshall Award) will talk about New Zealand’s census records in Forgotten but not gone
  • Brad Patterson of Victoria University will talk on Knowing your English ancestors in New Zealand
  • Gavin McLean, Senior Historian with the Ministry for Culture Heritage and author of many books, will speak on The Local Context your ancestors helped make

As part of Family History month, find out how to start researching your family history at a workshop led by local historian Warwick Johnston. Warwick is an experienced researcher who has just published a guide to writing family histories.

Saturday 25: Pathways to Family History

Come and get help with your family history research. The New Zealand Society of Genealogists is hosting a research day for anyone with an interest in family history. You will be able to consult experienced genealogists about resources you can use to find people from various parts of the world, including:

  • Ireland
  • Scotland
  • Greater London
  • England counties
  • Australia
  • New Zealand - Pakeha and Māori

Experienced staff from Wellington City Libraries, Archives New Zealand and the Alexander Turnbull Library will also be there to help.

Volunteers from the New Zealand Society of Genealogists will join staff of the Alexander Turnbull Library to introduce genealogists to the Library’s newly re-opened research services. Additional help and tours of the new spaces will be available.
