MFAT makes classified files public

Nearly 600 previously restricted files are now available as a result of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade’s annual release of classified information.

The newly released files [PDF 115KB] are accessible at Archives New Zealand’s Wellington office from today (02/08/2010).

The annual release is part of the Ministry’s ongoing programme of reviewing and releasing classified information as soon as practicable.

The files cover a wide range of topics and date mainly from the 1970s, although some are from earlier dates.

Topics range from apartheid in South Africa to information on chemical and biological weapons.

The files include several royal visits and ministerial visits. There is a record of a meeting in Paris in June1980 between Prime Minister Robert Muldoon and French President Giscard d’Estaing, for example.

There are also files on the lead up to the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, ANZUS, the Middle East, China, Pacific, the EEC and the Commonwealth.
Among files released are a number returned from the Ministry’s overseas embassies including Brussels, Kuala Lumpur, London, New Delhi and New York.
