Policy & Guidelines

The Office of Ethnic Affairs’ policy unit provides advice and information to a range of stakeholders including ethnic and mainstream communities, government agencies, non-government organisations (NGOs), iwi and the business sector on a variety of issues about ethnic communities and diversity.

The policy unit’s work is based on the Minister for Ethnic Affairs, Hon Hekia Parata’s priorities of economic development, government responsiveness and social harmony. Through this work we support the Minister to achieve her vision of a confident, equal and proud ethnic sector.

In 2011, the Office of Ethnic Affairs will release a government responsiveness toolkit for government agencies. This toolkit is a resource for government agencies to develop policies and services that are responsive, accessible and culturally appropriate for all New Zealanders.

We also actively promote the representation of ethnic people on community and statutory boards to increase leadership opportunities for ethnic people.
