Statement by the Chief Executives of Archives New Zealand, the National Library and the Department of Internal Affairs

25 March 2010

The Chief Executives of Archives New Zealand, the National Library and Internal Affairs say they are committed to ensuring the integration of the three agencies takes place smoothly, and delivers the benefits Cabinet wants.

The Minister responsible for each agency, Hon Nathan Guy, announced the integration this afternoon.

"The functions and services we provide now will continue, and our intention is to strengthen the institutions that have grown up around archive and library services", said Penny Carnaby, Chief Executive and National Librarian, Greg Goulding, Acting Chief Archivist and Chief Executive of Archives New Zealand, and Brendan Boyle, Chief Executive of the Department of Internal Affairs.

"There will be some changes needed in the way staff are organised in each agency, including Internal Affairs, and legislation will also be needed.

"Staff were told of the government's decision earlier this afternoon. As Chief Executives we each remain responsible for our staff and the services they provide until integration. We will be working closely together and communicating with staff and those who use our services as we consult and decisions are made".
