Locking lips for equality

Two male students from The College of New Jersey have broken the world record for the recorded "Longest Continuous Kiss".

Gay friends Matty Daley and Bobby Canciello locked lips for 33 hours, beating the 32 hours 7 minutes and 14 seconds record of straight couple Nikola Matovic and Kristina Reinhart, which was set in Germany on Valentine's Day 2009.

It's the first time a gay pair has held the record and they undertook the exhausting challenge under the Our Lips Are Sealed campaign, with the aim to "queer the Guinness World Records".

They wanted to show the world that a kiss between two men (or women) can be so simple. "After years of fighting bigotry and discrimination, it's time to put down our words and demonstrate otherwise. When there's nothing left to say, say it with a kiss," they writeon their website.

Congratulations are flowing for the men from all over the world in their Facebook page, as they drew thousands of viewers who watched them do everything from sending text messages to dancing as they remained lip-locked.

The students also developed a photo campaign in the lead-up to setting the record, shooting a series of pictures which drew inspiration as recreations of famous kisses, including the Spiderman image above. Here are some more of our favourites:
