Summary

The December 2009 quarter HLFS showed the labour market continued to weaken with the unemployment rate rising to 7.3% - its highest level in 10 years.   The increase in the unemployment rate was driven by an unexpected increase in the participation rate and strong population growth.  Employment held up better than expected, only falling by 0.1% in the December 2009 quarter.
