DJ Danice Dearborn
DJ Danice spins discs for LGBT nights in Christchurch, but we found out she also has an extraordinary Second Life.

GayNZ.com: How did you first get started with DJing?

DJ Danice: Having played in many bands, I was the person who put on music during breaks. I love music passionately, deeply. Music takes us on a magical path through the triumphs and tortures of life. I've always been driven to seek new, interesting sounds.

What's your background, and where did you grow up?

I was born in Oregon, USA. On my 4th birthday, moved to Vancouver, Canada, before moving to Wellington, New Zealand, aged 8. On my 9th Birthday, moved to Motueka, and grew up there, until I left home at 18.

When did you come out as lesbian, and what was it like for you at the time?

I kind of came out gradually after I left home. It's always been difficult to find people who I'm similar to.

What's your relationship status?

Single.

What do you think are the most pressing issues currently facing the NZ's LGBT community?

New-Friend-_-Danice.jpg
I can only speak for Christchurch's LGBT Community. I feel we need to Unite. I know it may sound simplistic, but we need to accept and embrace each other. We're a small Country. An even smaller Canterbury. Let's look for good things in each other.

What's your worst habit?

Preaching.

Your biggest fear?

Knowing I'm about to die., eg ; on a plane that's going down, a car that's rolling etc.

Your favourite music at the moment?

Disco.

Any books or magazines you're reading and recommending?

The Listener. NORML News. Reader's Digest.

Which are your favourite TV programmes?

Survivor. Ellen.

Your favourite websites?

'discogirl Hird' in Second Life
Secondlife.com – come visit there – my Second Life name is "discogirl Hird."

I spend most of my free time in Second Life. Friends there are as real as real-life friends. We speak with our realvoices. We laugh. We cry. The place is virtual, but the emotions & experiences are real. Here is one of a billion possible pictures I could take in Second Life. One can change one's clothes and surroundings in a second at any time. When I joined SL, over 2 years ago, I made my avatar look quite similar to my real self, only taller.

I also love tinyempires.com – a sub-addiction within Second Life.

If you could have one wish granted what would it be?

To really know what people want.

Who are your LGBT heroes?

Ellen. Miss Mole. Elton John. Madonna. Lianne Dalziel. Helen Clark.

What's coming up in the near future for you?

Hopefully, either Instantaneous Unforeseen Death, Or Utter Success as a Christchurch Entertainer.
