Little Britain star Matt Lucas's ex-partner Kevin McGee has killed himself, a year after the couple split.

Fairytale wedding: Matt Lucas & Kevin McGee in happier times
The pair were the first gay celebrity couple to divorce in Britain after laws allowing same-sex ceremonies were introduced there in late 2005.

McGee, 32, left a note on his Facebook profile saying "death is much better than life", and was found hanged hours later, reports the UK's Sun newspaper today.

He had developed a cocaine habit to deal with the couple's fame, which got worse after they split.

Lucas, famous for his Little Britain character "the only gay in the village" Daffyd, met McGee in a nightclub in 2002.

The pair married in 2006 in a lavish pantomime-themed ceremony in London, with Lucas dressed as Aladdin and McGee as Prince Charming.
