Background

The Royal Commission on Auckland Governance was established by the Government to investigate, and make recommendations on, local and regional government arrangements for the Auckland region in the future.

The Commission consists of three Commissioners, Hon. Peter Salmon, QC, Dame Margaret Bazley, and David Shand.  Throughout 2008, the Commissioners consulted with various groups (such as the different councils in Auckland), reviewed submissions sent to the Commission, conduct hearings, and undertook their own research.  They are writing a report with recommendations which will be presented to the Governor-General by March 31, 2009.

Participation and consultation are two key activities for the Commission: participation by a wide cross-section of Auckland residents, and consultation with the many interest groups of this region, and beyond.  In March 2008, the Commission published a discussion document, "Call for Submissions", which outlined their terms of reference and the issues they wanted input on. Over 3500 submissions from a wide variety of individuals and organisations were received by the Commission throughout March and April.
