Fitness for Frequent Flyers

Got the kind of job where you're up in the air a lot? Our personal trainer Julz Darroch has some quick fitness tips for jetsetters.

Puffin (my spousal equivalent) has gone on tour again. She's one of those "it's no point in starting an exercise routine until I am home for long enough to actually do it more than once" types.
However, it's been a year of touring and Puffin is struggling to fit into her trousers and is getting worried. So it's working out on the road for her.
My suggestion that if she just ran on the spot for 30 seconds each time someone called her 'Sir' didn't go down well, but that's only because she did the equivalent of a half marathon over 2 weeks in Singapore last year.
While the problem of working out while away from home could be solved by just taking her personal trainer to New York she's going to try and motivate herself (anyone need a personal trainer for their travels? I'm available).
So for those of you without the budget for an on call trainer, help is here- you know I can't let a fitness emergency come up without chucking my undies on over my tights and coming to the rescue...
Stress not weary travellers, I am not going to bore you with a set of ten simple exercises to do on the plane or in your hotel room just with your travel vibrator, 2 oranges and a very fertile imagination.
Be a gym tourist
Hotel gyms are boring! If you are a gym bunny, or just like to look at others working out then look up the local fitness club and go and have a play. The bigger the gym the better, for maximum sightseeing potential.
If you've been to chicken to try out a gym just in case you run into someone you know then this is the perfect opportunity to have a go. A word of advice though: leave the camera back at the hotel.
Have a giggle at other people's expense
Apparently in Hollywood they have a sightseeing tour of all the celeb hangouts, but get this… it's a running tour. I am not suggesting for a moment you join them. However if you are in the area then go watch, laughing at the dumb things other people do is a great ab workout.
Get an iphone (you know you want one)
All lezzy techie types will have one already (you lose your membership to the L Word fan club if you don't have an apple symbol on all your gadgets ladies).
For those of you still hunting for any feeble excuse to get one:
It's so exciting, you can download maps on how to get to any place in your destination city so you safely go walking, getting some exercise without getting lost. (google lesbian vegetarian restaurants in NY and you come up with enough politically correct food options to last you til Christmas)
Exercise on the flight
You know where your exits are in case of an emergency, right?
For keeping moving on a flight long or short, pop on your MP3 player, tune in to YMCA (the extended mix) and you'll find the airline cabin professionals cease to be doing evacuation procedures and are in fact doing a swishy wee hand jive- feel free to join them.
Once a year travellers
If you are just travelling every now and then stop being so paranoid and ditch the exercise routine for the holidays. Find something more important to do. Like, get a life!!
