Out Takes 2008: Out at the Wedding

Sister secrets: The girls are Out at the Wedding
The money's a little too tight to put on a full-scale Out Takes LGBT Film Fest in NZ this year, so the Reel Queer team have chosen just two of the best new films to entertain you with… and their lesbian-themed choice is a critically-acclaimed comedy.

Out at the Wedding involves two sisters - one a sweet southern belle and the other a New York "urbanite" (but both gorgeous, naturally!). The New Yorker, Alex, comes home to family for her sister's wedding - but is worried about revealing she secret… she has a bi-racial boyfriend at home in Manhattan. Drunk at the wedding reception, Alex starts to admit the truth, but everyone thinks she's beginning her 'coming out' story and they rush to accept her as a lesbian.

Rather than put them right, she then finds a real lesbian to pretend to be her girlfriend… but things then start to get complicated!

As she becomes increasingly entangled in her web of lies, Alex struggles to come to terms with her fiancé, her family and most of all herself along the way.

Director Lee Friedlander follows up her acclaimed 2004 film Girl Play with this witty, farcical romp that explores the sometimes comically bumbling way in which we come out to the people we love - whether we're gay or straight.

A Californian all-out comedy, Out at the Wedding won the audience award at last year's New York Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

Out at the Wedding plays at Wellington's Paramount Cinema on Thursday 12 June, and Auckland's Academy Cinema on Wednesday 18 June. Book in advance at the theatres in case they sell out! More details about LGBT movie screenings in 2008 are on the official Out Takes website.
