Mad on Madonna - her top ten as voted by you

Posted by: Kitten Power

madonnabritney.jpgThe results from a contest asking you to name your favourite Madonna song have some interesting results.  They’re counted back here . . . with a bit of music trivia and some videos for the top five, to boot (and a gratuitous girl on girl kiss pic).

10th equal. Frozen (1998) and Erotica (1992)

Trivia: Naomi Campbell appeared in the Erotica video.

9. Into The Groove (1985)

Trivia: This song featured in Madonna’s first feature film; Desperately Seeking Susan.

8. Holiday (1983)

Trivia: This was Madonna’s first ever hit song.

7. Jump (2006)

Trivia: Madonna is trying to channel a Japanese anime character in the video for Jump.

6. Music  (2000)

Trivia: Madonna was five-months pregnant with her son Rocco during the filming of the video, which is why an animation section was included.

5. Like A Prayer (1989)

4. Hung Up (2005)

3. Vogue (1990)

2. Like A Virgin (1984)

1. 4 Minutes (2008)

So what do you think?  I must say I’m surprised at the number one.  With all Madonna’s classics to choose from, why pick a song where she, like so many current pop artists, chose to use the combined timber powerof Timberland and Timberlake, rather than going it on her own?

As soon as I hear a song that starts with Timberland groaning, I can’t hear anything else . . .  meanwhile Justin Timberlake groping at Madonna’s clothes in the video is just plain scary - did he learn nothing from “nipplegate”?

The most disappointing thing about this song is that you can barely hear Madonna’s vocals through everything going on the background.  If 4 Minutes is supposed to save the world . . . somebody call Al Gore and tell him not to bother.

Give me the 80s, Like a Prayer and Like a Virgin, over 2000s hip-poptastic Madonna any-day!

So come on readers - tell me WHY OH WHY is 4 Minutes your favourite Madonna song?  Is it just the first one you thought of in your haste to enter the contest . . . or do you really, truly love it?

like a prayer is timeless.. there is no other madonna track that ALWAYS works on the dancefloor

Hmmm, quite a differing result from my poll on this site’s own message boards in which only one vote was received for it sayin “I love it”.

I find Madonna has constantly disappointed me since Ray of Light, she teases with glimmers of fabulousness (ie Music, Don’t Tell me) but then we get crap like this, or the so-desperate-to-get-the-gays-back-on-side-I’ll-steal-an-Abba-song…

Also Holiday wasn’t quite her first “hit” but it depends on what u classify as”hit”. Burning Up made the Aussie top 20, before Holiday, and is one of her longest charting songs there - it deserved to be huge everywhere.

Well for turning 50 years old this August, she is doing better than most women her age being able to grind and bend like that in her 4 minutes video. That was the first time i’ve actually bothered to sit down and actually listen to it because I’d heard all the negative hype.

What about “The Power of Goodbye”?? One of my absolute favorites from the end of the 90’s - So sweet, but so calm.

No no no… it doesn’t fit into my head either why ‘4 minutes’?! I agree totally about the overuse of the mix called Timbaland/Timberlake.

…and the sad fact that once visionary/leader of the music business - Madonna - has fallen into a soulless r’n'b/so-called-hip-hop-stuff everyone’s putting out and this doesn’t give anything new you haven’t heard so many times before.

OR… is this just a sad fact that ANYTHING she puts out is automatically worshipped by all the gays JUST because she’s Madonna. =(

Well she just went up again in my esteem:

Madonna loves to ‘french the French’
    Bang! Showbiz | Thursday, 08 May 2008

FRENCH KISS: Madonna performs at a concert in Paris, where she kissed a French fan.

Madonna kissed a female fan on stage last night after telling the audience she loves “Frenching the French”.

The pop superstar was playing a private concert to mark the launch of her latest album Hard Candy.

Dressed head-to-toe in black, Madonna said to the crowd of 1500: “Why do I have this relationship with France? I’m always drawn to working with French people - and Frenching French people.

    “Viva la France!”

The singer - clutching an electric guitar - then kissed an unidentified woman.

Just to answer juju’s question, there were just under 100 voting entries into the contest.

4 Minutes has to be one of the weakest Madonna songs I’ve ever heard. I’m not much for a lot of the old hits, but I prefer them over her new album. I thought purchasing it was a complete waste of time, it all sounds the same and it’s just not her. Confessions and Music albums were definately my faves.

    I can not believe 4M is #1, that’s a terrible song.
Cherish or even American Pie should have made the Top 10.

Of all the songs, 4 Minutes? She can’t even claim the whole song for herself, having to share it with Timbaland and JT.

where’s ‘Material Girl’? that’s my favourite. oh and “express Yourself’ too.

Someone needs to do a cover version of it, with two female and two male characters frontlining. Just please, not Madonna and Britney again, ever, ever, ever.

that is a weeeird result from a poll of 100 people. perhaps the entrants thought that voting for “4 Minutes” would increase their chances of winning it.

or maybe the sort of entrants attracted by a competition to win a new Madonna album are twinks for whom Voguing is some kind of quaint gay folk dance from the late 20th Century.

how else to explain the inclusion of 2006’s “Jump” at #7? let alone this year’s “4 Minutes” of predictability.

i would’ve had “Lucky Star” and “Material Girl” in there for sure, and probably “Deeper and Deeper”, “Rescue Me” and “Dress You Up” as well - but those songs are a part of my gay nostalgia, and would have little or no meaning to anyone under 30!

Madonna polls do seem to present some strange results.’s Rock List came up with the following Top 10 Madonna Songs in a reader’s poll conducted in March.

    1. “Like a Prayer”
    2. “Ray of Light”
    3. “Into the Groove”
    4. “Vogue”
    5. “Live to Tell”
    6. “Frozen”
    7. “Papa Don’t Preach”
    8. “Don’t Tell Me”
    9. “Borderline”
    10. “Secret”

Obviously this contest was answered by children cos 4 minutes as #1? Obviously people who voted don’t know jack about Madonnas music. Cos if you did, 4 seconds or hung up wouldn’t even register on any Madonna list. losers.

Yeah, I’m thinking people pretty much just named the first song that came to mind, from very recent memory. Bad form!
