How to Monitor Internet Activity

These guidelines are one tool that you can use to monitor your children’s Internet activity. However, no one tool can cover all circumstances, and active supervision of your children is the best safeguard. Nothing beats developing a relationship with your children where they will alert you to anything they encounter on the Internet that makes them feel uncomfortable or at risk.

The Internet can be a very powerful tool for good or bad. Being aware of the risks and how to use it safely can make it an enjoyable and useful experience.

You can review your child's Internet activities by finding the websites and pages viewed recently on any computer. Use these simple steps:

1. Open your Internet Browser (eg: Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator etc.)

2. a) For Internet Explorer (all versions):
  • Click on 'History' button in the toolbar (or type Ctrl+H on keyboard).

  • The 'History' bar will appear, listing the web addresses of sites visited recently.
  • Click on the addresses listed to visit the sites.
b) For Netscape Navigator 3.0:
  • Click and hold on 'Window' option in the toolbar. From 'Window' menu select 'History' (or type Ctrl+H on keyboard).
  • A pop up 'History' window will appear, listing the web addresses of sites visited recently.
  • Double click on the addresses listed to visit the sites.
c) For Netscape Communicator 4.0 - 4.08:
  • Click and hold on 'Communicator' option in the toolbar. From 'Communicator' menu select 'History' (or type Ctrl+H on keyboard).

Please note: Other browsers may differ from the above. Internet 'History' may be accessed through 'Options' menu or others in the toolbar of some browsers. If in doubt, contact the supporting company for information on how to access the 'History' list through your browser type.

3. To delete the sites, place cursor on address, click on the right button on your mouse and select delete from the drop down menu.
