Lost or Stolen Passports

If your passport or travel document has been lost or stolen you must immediately report the incident to local police and contact the nearest
New Zealand Passport Office:

In an emergency, if you are outside New Zealand, United Kingdom or Australia, you will need to contact the nearest New Zealand Embassy, High Commission, or Consulate for assistance. In situations of emergency, where a New Zealand representative is unavailable, you can approach the nearest British High Commission for assistance.

All New Zealand passports that are reported to the Passport Office as lost or stolen will be permanently invalidated in the passports system and cannot be used for travel. The passports will be reported to Interpol and international border control authorities. This means that anyone who attempts to use a lost or stolen New Zealand passport will be refused travel, and may face serious investigation. Any passport that has been reported lost or stolen and subsequently recovered by the holder must be returned to the nearest New Zealand Passport Office immediately so it can be physically cancelled.

If you require a replacement passport, complete the correct application form, including the Declaration of Loss or Theft on page 12, and send it to the nearest New Zealand Passport Office (Wellington, Sydney or London), with the appropriate fee. You will need to attach a copy of the Police report to your application. Please ensure your payment is in the currency of the office to which you are sending the application. The loss or theft of a passport or travel document is a serious matter, and there may be some delay while enquiries are made before a replacement can be issued.

If you are not applying for a passport or Emergency Travel Document immediately and you are unable to contact the New Zealand Passport Office directly, you can download a Declaration of Loss, Theft or Damage of a New Zealand Passport (pdf* 427kb). The declaration should be sent (or faxed with the original to follow) to the nearest Passport Office with a copy of the Police report.
