Lottery Grants

The New Zealand Lottery Grants Board was set up by Parliament to distribute the proceeds of state lotteries to the New Zealand community. It does this through Lottery Grants and direct payments to three statutory bodies.

Lottery Grants are available for different types of projects and services. Each stream of funding is managed by a separate committee made up of individuals from the community with specialist skills and knowledge.

An information sheet ( pdf, 161k)* can be downloaded that sets out the general principles governing lottery grants, or print copies are obtainable from Local Government and Community Branch offices.

Lottery Committees

Lottery Community
There is one Lottery National Community Committee and 11 Lottery Regional Community Committees. These make grants for projects that enable or encourage community self-reliance, capacity building and stability, opportunities for social, civil or cultural participation and reducing or removing barriers to such participation.

Lottery Community priorities include projects that have a community or social service focus, such as developmental or preventative projects, welfare and support services, and projects that help improve the well-being of people in the community.

The Lottery National Community Committee has two subcommittees:

Individuals with Disabilities
Makes grants to people with mobility and communications-related disabilities for the purchase and adaptation of vehicles, scooters and other mobility and communication equipment.

Pacific Provider Development Fund
Provides grants for the development and strengthening of Pacific Island community groups and social service providers to Pacific people in New Zealand.

There are five other national committees that may support your project.

Lottery Environment and Heritage
Provides grants for projects that promote, protect and conserve New Zealand’s natural, physical and cultural heritage

Lottery Marae Heritage and Facilities Committee
The committee funds capital works costs for the conservation, restoration and development of marae facilities, particularly wharenui, wharekai and wharepaku facilities.

Lottery Health Research Committee
Funds research that promotes the health of New Zealanders

Lottery Outdoor Safety Committee
Funds water safety and outdoor safety projects

If your application does not meet the criteria of a Lottery Distribution Committee, you may be able to apply to the Minister’s Discretionary Fund. The Lottery Minister's Discretionary Fund makes grants for individuals and groups for projects that fall outside the responsibility of other Lottery Committees, such as overseas travel that will benefit New Zealand, volunteer fire fighting services, and animal welfare.

Statutory Bodies

Local Government and Community Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs administers the Lottery Grants Board. The Board also directly allocates funds to these statutory bodies:
