Maori Community Development Worker Scheme

The Maori Community Development Worker Scheme came about as a Government capacity-building initiative designed to transfer skills to enable Maori communities to solve their own problems and thus contribute to an increase in self-reliance. To test the effectiveness of this approach, the Department administers funding for two community organisations to employ Maori Community Development Workers (up to one full time equivalent position in each project).

Funding is for up to three years, with a possibility of a fourth year, and provides for salary costs, operating expenses such as travel, communications, office and administrative overheads, and programme expenses. The workers will focus on building the capacity of the communities to create and sustain development opportunities by passing on training, planning, negotiation, project management, business planning, fund raising/marketing and relationship-building skills.

The achievement of objectives for projects funded under this scheme are measured through evaluation.

Funding through this scheme has been fully allocated until 2007.
