Our Translators


Janet Gootjes, Manager, BA Hons (Russian), DBA, NAATI III (German, French)
After completing her BA (Hons) at Otago University in 1982 Janet spent two years in Moscow studying Russian. She commenced employment at the Translation Service as a translator in 1988 and in 1994 she assumed the role of Manager. Janet is currently completing a Master of Public Management degree. Her working languages include:
  • Russian
  • German
  • French
  • Dutch.

Bill Ashwell, Translator, BSc, MA (Japanese), NAATI III (Japanese, Spanish)
Bill joined The Translation Service in 1978. In 1985 he left the service to take up a three-year appointment with Fujitsu Australia as a technical Japanese translator. In 1988 he resumed employment with the Translation Service as a translator. Bill provides translations from:
  • Japanese
  • Spanish
  • French
  • Italian
  • Portuguese
  • Scandinavian languages.

Margaret Borshevsky, Translator, BA, MA, NAATI IV (Russian)
Margaret is a native speaker of Russian. She commenced part-time employment at the Translation Service in 1993. She is currently preparing a PhD on the translation of Russian poetry. Margaret's working languages are:
  • Russian
  • Hebrew
  • Japanese
  • French.

Amy Zeng, Translator, BA, MA
Amy immigrated to New Zealand in 1993. She studied at Tsinghua University in China. Amy commenced employment at the Translation Service in 1994. Her working languages are:
  • Chinese
  • Korean.

Leanne McCarty, Translator, BA Hons (French)
Leanne joined The Translation Service in March 1999. She completed a BA (Hons) at Victoria University in French and Chinese in 1998. Leanne spent a year honing her French skills in Sion, Switzerland. She translates from French.
