Fire Policy

Government

  • legislates requirements for building, material and product standards, specifies safety and evacuation procedures in buildings, and mandates a national fire-fighting service
  • provides funding through a tax-like Fire Service levy that must be paid by all those who insure property and other assets for fire risk
  • owns and is responsible for the governance of the national fire-fighting organisation.

The Department administers the Fire Service Act 1975, which established the New Zealand Fire Service Commission as the controlling board for the New Zealand Fire Service.
