Youth Suicide Crisis Response Fund

The Ministry of Youth Affairs has a small budget set aside for crisis response interventions in circumstances involving youth suicide (young person aged between 12 and 25).

Purpose

The purpose of this fund is to provide financial support where there is a clear need for a quick response in a community in order to prevent further youth suicides or suicide attempts, and to provide financial support for postvention programmes.

Postvention refers to programmes that deal with the aftermath of suicide. These are particularly concerned with those affected by suicide. These programmes or initiatives are for the creation of safe environments thereby ensuring that further suicides do not occur. As each community has different needs there is some flexibility in funding community initiatives.

When can this fund be applied for?

This fund is for immediate support for communities in crisis situations. Whilst this fund is limited and there are some criteria, it is acknowledged that each situation will be different and there will be some flexibility allowing for community variances.

It is recommended that there is one contact person who liases directly with the Ministry of Youth Affairs. It is also recommended that a small (3–4people) advisory group be set up which is responsible for deciding what is appropriate for the money to be directed toward.

Applications need to include the following:

The application does not need to go into detail about the qualifications, amounts being paid, type of work, etc of the community workers involved. This section of the application need only be one or two paragraphs.

There are a number of agencies, which may be able to assist with the development of crisis response interventions; these are listed in appendix one.

Please note that the agency applying for the fund needs to be an Incorporated Society or a recognised community umbrella agency. This funding can not be given to a government agency or an individual.

Processing Applications

It is expected that applications will be processed and approved within three working days of receipt of the fully completed application form.

2 A group comprising of officials from the Department of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Pacific Affairs, Te Puni Kokiri, Specialist Education Service, and Ministry of Health and Ministry of Youth Affairs will assess the application.

3 Applicant notified as soon as possible by phone, fax or email (if available) and then by mail.

4 Monies will be paid into the nominated account number as soon as possible. Usually within two to three working days of approval.
